Why am I not seeing results with IPL? ›

If you've been doing IPL for a long time but had long gaps in between treatments, that might make it so you don't see results as quickly. What to try: Consistency is how to make IPL more effective. Plan on consistently using IPL once or twice a week for a few weeks and see if that makes a difference in results.

Medical conditions or changing hormone levels also play a role in hair regrowth, whether IPL and laser hair removal are in the mix or not. Hormones can keep some hairs in the resting phase during hair removal treatments, meaning treatments wouldn't affect these follicles.

You will notice that the hair growth after four weeks of IPL treatment will be lesser and thinner. After completing a session of 12 weeks, the hair growth will reduce completely, providing you with silky, smooth skin for a longer time. However, you may have to continue touch-ups as needed.

Some skin colours are best advised not to use IPL treatments as they may cause discolouration of the skin. While those with very light blonde or white hair don't have enough melanin in their hair follicles to absorb the laser light, and often the treatment is not as effective.

Check if the setting on the IPL device that you're using is right for your skin tone. Follow the steps in the manual or in the accompanying smartphone app to find the right setting and adjust the intensity if necessary. You might be using a setting that's too light, so the flashes have little to no effect on your skin.

IPL hair removal is a progressive treatment that offers full body hair removal - but you can use IPL to treat separate areas, such as your arms, legs, or pubic area, depending on your individual needs.

You need a small amount of hair visible at the surface of the skin for the IPL light to effectively destroy the follicle. Shaving the area being treated will help the laser focus beneath the skin and improve the results. If there's a lot of hair on the surface, a lot less light energy makes it deep into the follicle.

After laser hair removal treatment, the treated area may look and feel like it has stubble. This is a typical response to laser treatment. The hair follicles are still present, but the hair is damaged and falls out over time.

With hairs at different stages at any given time, a single laser session can only target hairs in the active growth phase. This discrepancy means that hairs not in the active phase during treatment will continue to grow, leading to the perception of stubble.

You'll know the treatment is working when your hair grows out slower and finer. This usually happens after the fourth session. Others have also noticed hair shedding more easily and falling out more frequently than before after IPL treatment and shaving becomes easier.

Understanding Laser Treatment Aftercare

Do not pull out hairs following a laser hair removal treatment. Laser hair removal targets hair follicles to remove hair from the body permanently. Therefore, the follicle has to be visible in the body area.

Hair could be in the shredding or resting phase. Consequently, it is not affected by the IPL treatment. Unlike with stronger laser machines, permanent hair removal cannot be possible with IPL because all the hairs in the targeted area will not be affected by the intense pulsed light beam.

What often happens, is the provider, simply changes the settings on their IPL/Laser to reduce the heat, therefore reducing the chance of burning or scarring, but also making the treatment practically ineffective. Please check with your technician that the machine they are using is actually able to treat darker skins.

IPL is not suitable for everyone. It is most effective on light to medium skin tones with hair ranging from natural blonde to dark brown or black. The device is not effective on very blonde, red, grey or white hair where the smaller amount of melanin would not absorb the light energy.
